I just wrote the following note to some of my dear coaching colleagues, and I decided to post it here.
I have been thinking about the theme of "heal yourself first", which I was trying to explain to you on the weekend. Here is a quote which better explains it:
"The body is a boat that carries the soul in the ocean of the world. If it is not strong, or it has a hole, then it cannot cross the ocean, so the first duty is to fix the boat." - Baba Hari Dass (who is a guru of Ram Dass.)
Other messages related to this theme, which have shown up in my life over the past couple of months:
"Self-care is your part-time job." - my beautiful friend Melanie.
"You have to give from your overflow." - my friend Deborah, in a workshop she presented, about Radical Self Nourishment. (...meaning, you have to deeply care for yourself, and fill yourself up, before you can give to others. You have to give from your overflow, not from your wounded place. Many people don't do the work, but really want to serve the world, and end up giving from a place of hurt. This cannot work and is unsustainable.)
I have been thinking a lot about this theme lately. I think I am done the healing part. Thankfully. Healing (from whatever you're dealing with: trauma, pain, old wounds, addictions, family of origin stuff, etc, etc, etc) takes time and work, but I am on the other side ... which is pretty good. Now it's time for the "heal the world" part, in whatever way that might emerge for me.
